Take Care Of Your Dog’s Skin In Winter

Changes in temperature and humidity can cause skin irritation for your dog. If your pet experiences dry, itchy skin during the colder months, there are ways to treat this condition and make your pet more comfortable.

Changing your dog’s diet during cold months can be a big help to their skin and coat. Switch your dog to a food with whitefish and salmon or add fish oil to their raw food, as omega 3 and 6 fatty acids can decrease scaly, dry skin.

Bathing with shampoos and soaps should be limited during the winter to avoid stripping essential oils and exacerbating skin problems for dogs with sensitive skin. Oatmeal baths can help soothe your pet’s skin. Adding an enzyme supplement or coconut oil to your dog’s meal can also help prevent dry, flaky skin.

Keeping a humidifier running is also a great way to keep your pet hydrated and regular brushing can help stimulate blood circulation and improve skin condition.
